William Walker is a senior writer for the national publication General Aviation News. He is an instrument-rated private pilot who has flown his 1956 tailwheel Cessna 172 on story assignments throughout the Southeast during 15 years with G.A. News. Walker is the author of outdoor books on long-distance river paddling, Alpine skiing and adventure travel and has written and edited for newspapers and magazines in the United States and Europe. During a 28-year career with the newspaper Stars and Stripes he reported from more than 50 countries. Walker is a member of the Aircraft Owners And Pilots Association (AOPA), the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Civil Air Patrol and the Alaska and Montana Pilots associations. He is the AOPA Airport Advocate for KMAO, Marion (S.C.) Regional Airport. Walker, from Nichols, S.C., is a graduate of Clemson University, the University of South Carolina and Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg, Germany, where he earned a Ph.D. in East European History.
